8. März 2007: 50 Jahre Frauenrechte in der Europäischen Union
Die Europäische Union feiert in diesem Jahr ihren 50. Geburtstag – und wir feiern mit, indem wir sie kritisieren. In den fünfzig Jahren ihres Bestehens hat es die EU nicht geschafft, Gleichheit von Männern und Frauen zu verwirklichen. Wie lange sollen wir noch warten? Noch einmal fünfzig Jahre? Oder gar hundert? Wir warten nicht auf bessere Zeiten, wir kämpfen darum. Europa war zwar eine Frau, aber die konkrete Europäische Union ist nicht weiblich. Sie ist vielmehr eine imperiale Macht, patriarchal und kriegerisch.
Wir Frauen der Europäischen Linken sind aktiv für ein anderes Europa. Ein Europa des Friedens. Ein Europa, das Gewalt nach innen und außen ächtet; das solidarisch ist gegenüber anderen Ländern und Kontinenten und Flüchtlinge freundlich aufnimmt. Ein Europa, das im Einklang mit der Natur und in Verantwortung für zukünftige Generationen handelt. Read more »

Dutch Provincial Assemblies: SP repeats parliamentary election triumph in regional poll
Following its increase from nine to twenty-five parliamentary seats in last November’s election, the SP has marked another enormous electoral victory in today’s polls for the Netherlands’ regional governmental assemblies, the “Provinciale Staten”.
Tripling the proportion of votes it received at the last provincial election in 2003, the party saw its representation rise from 38 to 83 across the nation – despite a reduction in the total number of seats. It also had the satisfaction of seeing five members elected to the last Provincial Assembly where no SP representative had previously sat, the north-eastern region of Drenthe. The result also means that the SP’s group in the Senate, which is elected by Provincial Assembly members rather than directly by the voters, will rise in numbers from four to twelve. Read more »

Bertinotti, what is happening in the Italian politics? How do you judge the battle that has shaken the country these days? What do you think of the solution found to the crises? What do you think of the attitude….
Bertinotti does not let me finish the question, he interrupts me and tells me that he is very happy to do an interview with Liberazione, and that he wants to talk about politics, about the future of the left, about the movements, about the ideas needed to fight the big battles of these years; but he does not intend to discuss the merits of the arguments concerning the parliamentary balances and the institutional and governmental choices. It would not be fair if the Chairman of the Camera, in such a delicate political moment, would engage in the parliamentary battle by releasing an interview to the newspaper of his party. Alright. I do not even try to insist that much. I change my question.
Bertinotti, at this stage the radical left is forced to go from utopia to realpolitik. Does it not risk, in a way, to change its own nature, to change its skin? Read more »

On the current developments in Italy
The Party of the European Left is following the government crisis in Italy with great attention. We deeply share the concerns of those parts of the Italian people and trade unions fed up with the unsocial course of the former Berlusconi government, that unilaterally followed the foreign policies of the Bush administration. Therefore we express our solidarity with the efforts of the Left and the movements to the effect that the Prodi government goes on working.
We think that the hopes of the Italian people and of the movements aroused by the left coalition’s victory and the establishment of the Prodi government last year must not be disappointed. We are fully aware of the split in Italian society which found its expression in the very narrow result of the last elections. But as a matter of fact the social and anti-war movements are still supporting the actions of this government as an alternative to those of the previous Berlusconi cabinet. They expect it being able to stop unilateralism and war policies, as stated in a declaration on the very day the Prodi government collapsed. Read more »

Prag, wir kommen!
Der Rat der Parteivorsitzenden und der Vorstand der Partei der Europäischen Linken berieten in Berlin

Der Januar war “heiß” wie lange nicht - das gilt sowohl für das Klima in Europa als auch für die Arbeit der Partei der Europäischen Linken (EL).
Zu der nun schon traditionell zu Beginn jedes Jahres in Berlin stattfindenden Tagung des Vorstandes der EL kam in diesem Januar der Rat der Vorsitzenden, das zweite Leitungsgremium der EL. Das bedeutete mehr Gäste, Übersetzung in sechs Sprachen und eine ganze Menge europäisch-linke Prominenz zu Gast in Berlin. Auch ein Fernsehteam eines großen öffentlich-rechtlichen Senders war zugegen, nur leider konnten sich die Verantwortlichen nicht dazu durchringen, tatsächlich etwas zu senden.
Das Jahr 2007 ist politisch hoch interessant, und die Europäische Linke hat im Rahmen der Berliner Tagung bedeutsame Papiere erarbeitet, die sich mit dem Irak, der Todesstrafe und der EL als Partei für Freiheits- und Grundrechte auseinandersetzen - Themen also, welche die medial erreichbare Öffentlichkeit durchaus interessieren.
